Welcome, friends and visitors. St. Caedmon's has stood watch over Hollow Creek since 1919, when fifteen farming families gathered to raise a sanctuary on a windswept rise off County Road 7. We are a small parish — about ninety families on the rolls — but we are mighty in fellowship and steadfast in faith.

If you are passing through, please stop in. The doors are unlocked from sunup to sundown, and there is always coffee in the hall on Sunday mornings.

Please pardon the website — I built it myself and I am still learning. If you find a broken link, kindly let me know. — T.V.

About Our Parish

St. Caedmon's Church on a summer afternoon
Summer, 2014. The bluff in the background is locally called "the Watch."

St. Caedmon (c. 657-684) was a humble English cowherd who, according to Bede, received the gift of song from an angel in a dream. He is a fitting patron for our small rural parish — an unlikely place where unlikely things have, from time to time, been known to happen.

Father Joseph Halverson has served as our pastor since 2008. We share him with St. Brigid's in nearby Crawford, where he says the noon Mass on Sundays. Our parish hall, built in 1962, hosts the Knights of Columbus, the Altar Guild, the youth group, and our annual cemetery work day.

The cemetery itself is older than the church, dating to 1894. Many of the founding families rest there. Visitors are welcome at any hour.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time PDF

Sunday, July 19, 2015

From Father Halverson

"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." (John 1:5)

A short note this week, friends, as I am away at the diocesan retreat in Bloomington. Please welcome Father Brody, who is covering both Masses today. Many of you will know him from his summers at St. Brigid's.

I ask your prayers for our youth tonight, and especially for Mr. Vance, who has poured his whole summer into the event he is finally ready to share with them. Whatever happens this evening, may the Lord watch over them all.

This Week

  • TONIGHT, 9:00 pm — The Gauntlet (Youth Group Lock-In). Parish Hall is closed to the public from 6:00 pm Saturday through 6:00 am Sunday. Please do not enter the hall during this time.
  • Mon: Office closed
  • Tue: Rosary Group, 7:00 pm
  • Wed: Choir Practice, 6:30 pm
  • Thu: Knights of Columbus, 7:00 pm
  • Fri: Adoration, 8:00 am–noon

Prayer List

Marian Holcomb (continued recovery); the Coleman family; the repose of the soul of Edmund Reilly; Catherine R., that she may be found; the seven who came before; our fourteen, who go in tonight; Father Halverson, traveling; vocations to the religious life; all faithful departed.

From Mr. Vance

Tonight is the night. By the time most of you read this we will be preparing the hall.

Some of you have asked, with reasonable concern, what exactly the Gauntlet is. I have not been very forthcoming, and that has been on purpose. I can say this much: it is a story we have been telling ourselves for a long time, in pieces, and tonight we tell it all the way through.

Phones will be collected at the door. Please respect this. Pray for us — for the children especially, who are braver than I deserve. I am grateful to have spent these years with them.

— T.V.

Thank You

To everyone who made this year's VBS a success; to the Knights for the cemetery work day; and to the unnamed donor who left the box of votive candles in my office last Tuesday. They will be put to good use.

Fifteenth Sunday — Parish Picnic Today! PDF

Sunday, July 12, 2015

From Father Halverson

The picnic is today, friends! Please stay after the 10:30 Mass for fellowship, food, and the children's games. Many thanks to the Wynn family for chairing this year. A reminder that the parish hall will be closed to other use next Saturday for the youth group's overnight event — please plan accordingly.

This Week

  • Mon: Office closed
  • Tue: Rosary Group, 7:00 pm
  • Wed: Choir Practice, 6:30 pm — FINAL Gauntlet permission slip deadline
  • Thu: Knights of Columbus, 7:00 pm
  • Fri: Adoration, 8:00 am–noon
  • Sat: Gauntlet Lock-In (hall closed to public after 6:00 pm)

Prayer List

Marian Holcomb; the Coleman family; the soul of Edmund Reilly; Catherine R. and her family, in this difficult anniversary; the seven who came before; vocations; safe travels for those on summer journeys.

From Mr. Vance

We are full. Fourteen souls, exactly the number we hoped for. I am sorry to those still on the fence — registration is closed.

Permission slips MUST be back by Wednesday, no exceptions. Please bring: a flashlight, a water bottle, comfortable shoes, and a sense of adventure. Please leave behind: phones (these will be collected at the door), watches, and any expectations of what tonight will be. We are trying something we have never tried before.

— T.V.

Thank You

To the parents who chaperoned VBS — you blessed those children. And to Helen K. for the altar flowers, as always.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time PDF

Sunday, July 5, 2015

From Father Halverson

Greetings on this Independence weekend, friends. Let us give thanks for the freedoms we enjoy and pray for those who serve to preserve them. A wonderful turnout for last week's cemetery cleanup — God bless our Knights and the half-dozen of you who stayed late into the evening.

From Mr. Vance — Youth Group

A reminder, parents: The Gauntlet is on Saturday, July 18. This is a lock-in event for our 9th-grade-and-up youth, running 9:00 pm to about 5:00 am. We are doing something a little different this year: an overnight scavenger event with a story we have been writing for months. Permission slips are due by July 15. There is a small registration fee ($5) to cover supplies. 14 spots open, first-come first-served.

If your son or daughter has done this before with me at another parish, you already know what to expect. If not, please come find me after Mass and I will be happy to talk about it.

Thank You

To the altar guild, and to Helen K. for the beautiful flowers at last weekend's wedding.

Youth Group

Our high-school youth meet Wednesday evenings at 7:00 pm in the parish hall during the school year. In the summer, we move outdoors when the weather permits and indoors when it doesn't. Mr. Tyler Vance has led the group since 2011.

Each summer the group runs an overnight event we call The Gauntlet. It is part scavenger hunt, part story, part long conversation around a candle. We do not say much about it in advance — the not-knowing is part of it — but past participants will tell you it has stayed with them.

Photos from past Gauntlets are not posted here, by request of the participants. The story is theirs to tell, or not.

Beautiful service for my mother's funeral. Thank you Father Halverson for the kindness, and to the ladies who brought the casserole. The cemetery is so peaceful at the top of that hill. Mom would have loved it.

Stopped in after seeing the church on the highway. What a gem. The bell rang while we were inside and gave us both goosebumps. Will be back.

Thanks for letting us use the hall for our chapter meeting! The kids always behave better in there for some reason.
